Sony Hikes the Price of its Playstation 5 Console in Major Countries, Including Pakistan

In Pakistan, Sony’s PlayStation 5 (PS5) video game console is already hard to find, and its price continues to rise daily. The next-generation console (digital edition) is presently around Rs 180,000 in the nation. This is a significant jump from the price of Rs 90,000 one year ago.

As a result of “difficult economic conditions,” Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan has revealed in a blog post that the business would be increasing the official pricing of the PlayStation 5 (PS5) console in some areas. According to him, the business was forced to settle on a challenging course of action in light of the fluctuating rates of inflation seen throughout the world. On the other hand, customers in the United States will not be impacted in any way.

Sony has decided to raise the suggested retail price of its console in the United States of America, Canada, Mexico, Europe, the United Kingdom, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Latin America, China, and Australia. Beginning on September 15th, the new policy will be implemented throughout Japan. There will be a price rise of €50 for the disc version and £30 for the digital edition of PS5 in Europe and the United Kingdom. In Japan, the console price will increase by around 10,500 yen.

The digital edition of the PlayStation 5 in Europe can now be purchased for €449.99, while the disc edition can be bought for €549.99. This indicates that we should anticipate paying more than 200,000 Pakistani Rupees for the console in Pakistan. It already costs around 230,000 Indian rupees in particular retailers, so we may potentially see a startling 250,000 Indian rupees or a higher price tag.

According to Ryan, the most important task for Sony right now is to continue expanding the PlayStation’s availability so that more people can use it. He explained that “given the current state of the economic situation worldwide,” the price hike is unavoidable. The CEO also mentioned that Sony would be able to increase production in May of the following year. Still, it is possible that this increase will not be sufficient to meet the surging demand occurring worldwide.

However, Sony is not the first corporation in the game industry to respond to the pressures of inflation. The price of Facebook’s Meta Quest 2 VR headgear went up by £100, or 33 percent, in July, with the company claiming the same inflationary forces as the reason for the hike. The business claimed in a statement that “by reducing the pricing of Quest 2, we can continue to increase our commitment to pioneering research and new product development that pushes the VR industry to new heights.”
