In India, Twitter is experimenting with a new method of sharing tweets by putting a WhatsApp button under the postings for Android operating system users. By hitting the new button and selecting the WhatsApp option again, users can share tweets with their friends and groups on WhatsApp; nevertheless, this process is repetitive and complicated.
The usual share button located under a tweet will be replaced with a WhatsApp share button, which will offer a menu with additional choices such as bookmarking, sending through Direct Message, copying the link to the Tweet, and sharing on other social networking sites. However, because the WhatsApp symbol only takes the place of the share icon without altering its functionality, the implementation of this feature is inconsistent.
This should not be surprising considering how popular WhatsApp is in India. The chat application has more than 400 million users in the country, making it one of the most popular applications for sharing material with close friends and family members. As a result, Twitter is attempting to attract more users to its platform by capitalizing on the widespread popularity of the messaging app that Meta owns.
“Starting today, we will be doing a new experiment that will only be available in India, which is a very significant market for us. We are replacing the share icon on Tweets with the WhatsApp icon for most people who use Twitter on Android in the country. This will allow users to share their favorite or noteworthy Tweets outside of Twitter easily, thereby making the experience more open, accessible, and holistic for users,” Shirish Andhare, director and product head for Twitter India, said.
Twitter is not the only social network in India to try a button that allows users to “share” content to WhatsApp. Local language social network ShareChat, supported by companies like Twitter and Google, has a control very similar to this one next to every one of their posts, along with a counter showing the number of times the post has been shared.
This new test will be accessible to most people who use Twitter for Android in India. In the past, Twitter has only made its experiments available to a limited number of users. However, because this is only a test, the corporation reserves the right to decide whether or not to continue developing this new sharing tool.
